Trying to Get Those Ratios Right

Hello all.  We have a new rescue dog in the family, and he's awesome.  I've gotten him switched to a commercially prepared BARF diet, and all is going well.  Now, I would like to try my hand at making my own.  I'm good with incorporating percentages of liver, other organs, and veggies, but the bone:muscle meat ratio has me a bit confused. I've read everything from...
50% bone : 50% muscle meat
to 80 bone : 20 muscle meat
to 20 bone : 80 muscle meat.
Any guidance you could share would be very appreciated!!
~ Rhonda

Re: Trying to Get Those Ratios Right

Rhonda, you're gonna laugh, but it's very simple.  The correct calcium/phosphorus ratio is 50%-50%.  This perfect balance can be found in chicken wings, chicken necks, chicken backs and turkey necks.

I leave the skin on for the Omega 6's because I supplement with a high quality Omega 3 fish oil.

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for your help!  If I shoot for this plan, should I be okay?  40% muscle meat, 30% bone, 5% liver, 5% offal, and 20% veggies.  Then, maybe sub an egg or fish for some of the muscle meat about once a week?

Re: Trying to Get Those Ratios Right

You're very welcome!  It is important that the calcium/phosphorus (meat to bone) ratio be at 50% each.  If it's off, it may cause health issues down the road.  Veggie at 20% is fine and offal at 10% is fine too, as long as the RMB's are 70%.

Hope this clarifies!
