Re: What's the best way to start feeding a raw diet?
Most of us felt the same way you are feeling right now, well at least I did. I was afraid I was going to kill my dogs when I gave them their first raw chicken leg. My stomach was in knots until they finished. But boy was I relieved when they finished and looked at me licking their chops, waiting for more. After 3 days of this, my anxiety was gone, and I felt much more confident as each new day went by. Just start out real slow, one raw meaty bone a day until you start feeling comfortable. Then pick a vegetable and give that to them. You'll see it will be second nature as time goes on.
Re: What's the best way to start feeding a raw diet?
I also was quite nervous because there are conflicting opinions and you just don't know who knows what they're really talking about and who can we really trust (not always our Vet that's for sure!) Or who speaking with bias opinions to sell their own products, or working for large corporations behind kibble, all based on greed. Anyway, I kept reminding myself that if my dog got lost in the woods, regardless of dogs being domesticated, her biological digestive system has not changed, therefore she would have to kill and eat raw meat and bones. Also, I've always wondered why dog food comes in the form of dry kibble (apart from convenience for humans), and no matter which brand I bought, the very top brands, they all had the same gross *** smell lol... Just gross smelling. In addition my inner voice always nagged at me that it really can't be all that good for my dog, which sadly I ignored, stupid me. One day I took a single kibble from the brand I was feeding my dog and put it in my mouth...I didn't chew it, but allowed it to mix with my saliva until I could taste it and the first taste my brain registered was SALT. Yes, it had a very salty taste to my surprise. A few more seconds and then I tasted a strong turkey grease taste, which made sense since it was turkey kibble, however between the saltiness and grease flavors I was convinced no more kibble. Tasting my dog's kibble confirmed all the negatives I was reading about kibble food. My dog was constantly hungry, always drinking lots of water and also bloated looking. So I was constantly stressed between feeding her more food and preventing her from getting fat. I exercised and exercise my dog plenty (twice a day as well), but she kept putting on the weight, and even when I cut back she still looked bloated like a senior dog gets (she just turned 2). Now, I've only gone raw the past 3 days and already I notice differences in her behavior and appearance! She has already stopped pestering/begging me for more food, she drinks less water and already looks less bloated. Absolutely amazing! And her stools are fine as well, so she had no problem going raw "cold turkey". Ok, here is my 2 cents :) First, keep reading about raw vs kibble, and although it can get and feel really confusing and overwhelming at times because of the many opinions, you will begin to gain knowledge and wisdom and then peace of mind as to what kind of raw diet is best for your dog. People fear and get anxious because they lack answers, they lack knowledge and understanding. Again, I was really nervous too, but I did my research before I made the switch, and I continue to because now I'm looking into specific nutrients in meats and bones and a more balanced diet for her etc., but I am sooooooooooooo glad I am feeding my dog raw meat in the mean time. Hope this helps :)
